Preparing Your Mitsubishi for Summer: Key Mechanical Checks
Summer is THE perfect season to hit the road, but it's also a demanding time for your Mitsubishi vehicle. The heat can be devastating for your model, in fact.
To fully enjoy your summer travels, it's important to make sure your vehicle is ready to handle the heat, traffic jams during the heatwave, and changing conditions. Here are the main mechanical components to monitor for a hassle-free summer.
1 — The Cooling System
When temperatures rise, your Mitsubishi's engine works harder. In extreme heat, it can overheat. That's why coolant is so important. It plays a crucial role in preventing overheating. Therefore, check the level and condition of the fluid: it should be clear and free of rust or deposits. The radiator must also be in excellent condition and not be prone to leaks.
Recommended maintenance should include flushing the system if it hasn't been done for some time.
2 — The Air Conditioning System
The air conditioning system is also a valuable ally when the temperature outside becomes unbearable. A system in good condition is essential for your comfort, especially on long trips, but also if you're stuck in a traffic jam.
How do you know if the system is still in perfect condition? Pay attention to the quality of the air cooling. If you feel the air becoming less cool or the system is making an unusual noise, it's time to have it inspected. A refrigerant recharge or cleaning the cabin filter may be necessary.
Make sure to have it checked. Proper maintenance will ensure its proper functioning. If you neglect it, it can give you the slip when you least expect it.
3 — Brakes and Suspension
Summer, with drier roads, can give you a false sense of security. However, your brakes must respond quickly and efficiently. Sometimes, dust or small rocks on the road can turn the asphalt into a slippery surface. That's why it's important to have efficient brakes. Therefore, have your pads, rotors, and brake fluid inspected.
The suspension, meanwhile, must be able to withstand the knocks of potholes or gravel roads typical of summer excursions.
4 — Your Tires
As consumers, we tend to think about replacing our tires as winter approaches. However, it's just as important to have equally effective and high-quality tires in the summer, whether for grip on hot surfaces or for effective water evacuation.
Also, always remember that heat increases your tire pressure. Check it regularly, as well as for wear. An underinflated tire can have less grip and increase fuel consumption, not to mention that it won't be as efficient if you have to perform emergency maneuvers.
5 — The Battery
... A vehicle diagnosis could save you a lot of trouble this coming summer.
